Grief counselling is a challenge. Recent studies show that the traditional '7 stages of grief' aren't as baked in as we've all believed. For most people, that path is far more complicated.


Tattooing is one of the most ancient methods of communicating ideas about our
personal lives and loves, our experiences, our role in the community, and our relationship with the world. Tattooing also brings a pre-packaged language that can
express multiple, complex ideas, and even convey an acceptance of the new reality that comes with their application.

One of the concept directions provided was a sense of depth as well as complexity. The selected style was a hybrid of the two treatments below; it used the simpler topographical map style, but with a grayscale sketch overlay of just the lines.

Showing complexity of shape vs line was something they wanted to explore. In the end, we struggled with finding a good way to express the messiness of grief without sacrificing readability. There were designs they liked much better, but this was a good exercise!
